Dove Cresswell’s Online Puppy Training Videos

There are many dog training ebooks available for purchase on line. For some though, reading a book isn’t the best way to learn. To answer this demand, some dog trainers have produced on line videos as the medium to deliver their dog training knowledge. We’ve reviewed a number of these types of products and frankly, we haven’t found many we thought were good value for money. Until we looked at Dove Cresswell’s online puppy training videos.

The first thing that caught our eye was Dove’s background. Not only is she a certified and experienced dog trainer, she’s also made a name for herself as a trainer for dogs in movies, TV shows and TV commercials. That kind of resume brings a whole bunch of credibility - not just because that industry only uses the best trainers, but also because of the time constraints they work under. Hollywood dogs need to be able to learn a specific trick in very little time and then do it consistently. Delays cost money so only trainers that can deliver that kind of service work in that industry.

Based on that, we bought her program and went through it. This is what we found.

Dog training via easily loading online video

There are no ebooks in this package. The entire program is video and audio based. The core product consists of seven videos.

The first video covers house breaking issues and concentrates on the best way to house break a new puppy.

The second one concentrates on crate training and in addition to a detailed and illustrated presentation of how to do it, explains why it is such a good training method and the number one rule that you must follow in doing it properly.

The third video is about dog obedience training and covers numerous techniques to teach your dog to “sit”, to “down” and to “stay”.

Video number four covers teaching your dog to walk on a leash. Dove advocates the use of a choke collar for this, saying that it is the most effective training tool. (We would caution that it is only effective if you know how to use it properly and if you don’t it can quickly become a punishment more than a tool for correction. There are other methods available.)

The next video is all about the recall command and the techniques presented here are about the best we’ve ever seen to teach this essential behavior.

The sixth video is all about teaching your dog good manners and includes exercises specifically designed to rectify dogs jumping up on people, how to teach your dog to “leave something” on command, how to stop excessive barking and whining, how to stop your dog from stealing food off the counter and what to do if your puppy starts nipping or mouthing you or anyone else.

The final core video covers training your dog to do tricks. Dove explains quite clearly the difference between obedience training and teaching tricks and why it’s so beneficial to work on tricks as well as obedience training. She then shows techniques to teach your dog to shake a paw, to wave, to roll over and to speak. Check it out here.

And finally, there are short audios with quick tips in choosing the best dog toys, earning your dogs respect and choosing the right dog food and treats.

The bonuses aren’t that impressive - good stuff, but only a minute or two long for each. However, the core package is excellent.

One of the strengths of the Online Puppy Training Videos is that there is absolutely zero fluff - not a word. As soon as the first video opens you are learning relevant things. And the content is, well, perfect. One of the design goals Dove had in creating this was to make the package as simple and focused as possible so customers could easily get to the information they need and start applying it.

But that isn’t the thing we like the most. The biggest benefits to this package are the intangibles you don’t get reading a book. Dove’s verbal explanations convey the importance of tone, the proper way to give commands and demonstrate that dog training should be fun. Going through the videos makes you want to get up and try a ten minute training session immediately!
